Animal Welfare Educational Programs and Experiences for Schools within Coconino County.
High Country Humane, in partnership with the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County, brings the Paws & Learn program to classrooms throughout the county. This engaging educational program helps students of all ages understand the importance of animal welfare while introducing them to the vital services our shelter provides to the Coconino County community.
Teachers can customize the experience by selecting one of three animal welfare topics, or a combination of topics, to best fit their curriculum and schedule. Available topics include Dog and Cat Behavior, Pet Responsibility, and High Country Humane Services and Career Paths. Each session features an interactive classroom presentation along with age-appropriate activities designed to encourage participation and critical thinking.
The program’s learning objectives align with Arizona STEM standards. Additional focus areas may include dog and cat breeds, spay and neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, animal behavior, animal protection, enrichment, responsible pet care, training, and the prevention of animal cruelty.
How it Works:
Teachers can choose one of three established topics, or request a special topic tailored to their classroom needs. We will come to your classroom. Each session includes:
-
A visit that will last 45 minutes in duration led by a High Country Humane team member
-
A hands-on activity appropriate for the students’ grade level
-
A potential visit from a puppy ambassador (depending on allergies, liability waivers, and puppy availability)
-
No cost to the school
Topics:
Dog & Cat Behavior
Learn about dog and cat behavior, socialization, training, enrichment, and breed-specific needs. Students may also meet a Puppy Ambassador after the presentation. Activities vary by grade.
Pet Responsibility
Explore essential pet care, including veterinary care, training, enrichment, and animal protection. Students may meet a Puppy Ambassador, and activities are tailored to the classroom.
High Country Humane Services & Career Paths
Discover what High Country Humane does, the general history of the shelter, and the different departments at an animal shelter. Students may meet a Puppy Ambassador, with activities designed for their grade level.
